ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orange County Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday announced the search is over for the two teenagers who killed 15 year-old Alex Vargas exactly one year ago.
“The suspected killers in Alejandro’s case are no longer a threat to this community,” Sheriff Mina said.
The two suspects in Vargas’ murder are 19 year-old Deandre Florence and 16 year-old Denim Williams. Orange County Detective Brian Savelli announced their names publicly for the first time.
On January 2, 2019, both Florence and Williams tried to rob a man of his cell phone. The man fatally shot Williams during that robbery, and Florence was charged with murder in connection to the death.
“Deandre Florence is in jail awaiting trial, and Denim Williams is deceased,” Savelli said. “Those are right now the only two suspects we have in the case.”
Vargas’ aunt gave a statement on behalf of the family thanking the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and detectives who worked on the case.
“I had no doubt in my mind that you guys will take that as serious as me and my family,” she said. “Everyday it’s hard to believe my nephew is gone, but I’m also grateful he had a spirit like no other.”
On December 18, 2018, Alex Vargas was shot in the head while he was walking to school. Mina said he was on the phone with his mother when it happened. Vargas was robbed, shot, and “left to die in the streets.”
